The Small County Galway village of Clarinbridge lies approximately 8 miles south of Galway in the Diocese of Kilmacduagh. It is in the eastern section of Galway Bay, at the mouth of the River Clarin, and back in the middle of the 18th century hosted its own race meeting with results recorded in ‘The ‘Historical List of Horse Races & Matches of 1761’. A number of prominent racing nobles supported the event, including Lord Jocelyn and Lord Belvedere. The 5 day extravaganza came to an end on Saturday 26th September 1761 when Sir Edward O’Brien’s Lottery won the main Purse. |
